Part 46 - VE Day

Today marks the 75th Anniversary of the end of the worst conflict in human history. Approximately 70-85 million people lost their lives as a result of World War 2, many of them civilians. However, 75 years ago today, an armistice was signed ending all conflict in Europe. After nearly 6 years of the horrors of war, it was finally over. There was finally peace. On this day in 1945, those at home celebrated the peace won for them by the troops in Europe.

As we rightly remember the losses of that war, and celebrate victory in the fight to ensure freedom and peace, I hope we do not forget that there is a greater peace than that which victory in 1945 could bring.

‘Therefore, since we have been justified through faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through him we have gained access by faith into this grace in which we now stand.’ Romans 5:1-2

We were once in conflict with God, we were not neutral to him but were opposed to him. But now because of God’s grace there is peace between him and those who have faith in Christ. It isn’t a peace that we have won or earned, but one that was won for us by the death of Christ. Let us then celebrate the peace that Christ has won for us.
