God is not less than you

A parent talking to a child

I recently heard of an atheist who described praying as 'religious talking to yourself.'

I thought that was quite an interesting comment and it does make total sense if you don't believe in the God of the Bible.

If you do know the God of the Bible, however, things are very different.

All over the world parents will do more-or-less anything for their children. Even the ones that have children who have totally gone of the rails are usually very well disposed towards their kid.

'We cook for them, shop for them, long all kinds of things for them.

A parent longs to provide for the needs of their children. We cook for them, shop for them, long all kinds of things for them. We help them with their home work, buy them swimming lessons, look for the best in their actions and delight to hear even the smallest details of their days.

God may be a lot more. But he is certainly not less than those things you do.

'If you then, though you are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father in heaven give good gifts to those who ask him!' Matthew 7:11, the Bible.

Jesus is saying, learn what you are like to understand your heavenly Father.

When we pray to God through Jesus Christ he is absolutely dying to hear from us and to respond.

Prayer is not 'religious talking to yourself', it is doing what happens in every good home, each day.

SUGGESTED ACTIONS...

  • Get a note book and write to the Lord a 'Dear God...' letter. Tell him what is on your mind and ask for his help in the name of Jesus.
  • Begin by reading a Psalm from the Bible. When your heart is fed by God, you will find it more natural for it to overflow in prayer.
  • Become a Christian. Maybe all this is totally new or weird to you. God offers a relationship where he will walk with you through life. Joining us on a Sunday, we can help you understand what it means to be a follower of Jesus Christ.
